The political landscape in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana has seen a significant influence from Telugu non-resident Indians (NRIs) residing in the United States. These individuals have emerged as a sought-after demographic for political engagement, especially during election seasons. Telangana PCC president A Revanth Reddy’s recent visit to the US alongside Rahul Gandhi underscored the growing importance of connecting with the Telugu NRI community.

The Telugu diaspora in the US, comprising a substantial number of Indian Americans, holds considerable sway. With a population of over 44.5 million, including 12.7 million NRIs and 31.8 million US citizens of Indian origin, they possess a median household income of $101,408 – the highest among all ethnic groups as of 2021. This economic prosperity, combined with their significant population, makes them a target demographic for political parties.

Kalavala Vishweshwar Reddy, founder chairman of the Global Telangana Association (GTA), highlights the impact of Telugu Americans in professional and business spheres. Due to their elevated social and financial status, political parties naturally seek to align with them to advance their interests.

Leaders like BRS Minister KT Rama Rao have recognized the potential of engaging with Telugu NRIs. Their visits to the US aim to encourage investments in Telangana’s development projects and foster connections between NRIs and their places of origin through initiatives like “Mana Ooru-Nana Badi.”

Various political parties have established NRI cells to engage this influential community. For instance, the BJP Telangana NRI Cell operates globally, promoting the party’s ideals and enticing NRIs from other political affiliations. Similarly, the BRS and Congress have their own NRI Cells to propagate their ideologies and connect with the diaspora.

Telugu NRIs in the US wield significant political and economic clout, making them an essential demographic for Indian political parties. Their support, both financial and in terms of influence, contributes to shaping the political landscape in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

Prominent organizations like TANA and ATA have played crucial roles in representing Telugu Americans and fostering cultural exchange. While TANA has traditionally represented the influential Kamma community, ATA takes a more inclusive approach with a strong presence of Reddys. Additionally, the Global Telangana Association (GTA), established in 2022, aims to unite Telangana NRIs under one banner.

The influence of Telugu NRIs extends beyond financial contributions. Their connections with the US government enhance their value to India. Political leaders, such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recognize their importance and share details of deals made during their US visits, highlighting their role as a bridge between the two countries.

At the state level, NRIs are encouraged to contribute to their native regions through investments in education and infrastructure. Their involvement not only benefits the communities they hail from but also boosts the image of the ruling party.

While financial contributions remain discreet, businessmen among the diaspora often support parties discreetly, seeking influence both in their home states and in their business endeavors. Jalagam Sudheer, a BRS leader, emphasizes the individual nature of such transactions.

Telangana has witnessed NRIs successfully contesting elections, like Huzurnagar MLA Shanampudi Saidireddy and former MP Madhu Yashki Goud. However, ticket allocations can be influenced by various factors, including caste affiliations.
