United States regulators have expanded workplace safety guidelines for gig economy drivers, with developments confirmed within the past 24 hours following a series of incidents involving immigrant workers, including those of Indian origin. The updated framework focuses on enhancing driver safety through improved reporting mechanisms, emergency support features, and stronger accountability for platform operators.

Officials from the Department of Labor stated that the guidelines are designed to address vulnerabilities faced by gig workers who often operate in isolated conditions. “Ensuring the safety of all workers, regardless of employment structure, is essential,” a spokesperson said.

  • Indian-origin drivers, who form a significant portion of the gig workforce in major US cities, have welcomed the move

  • Community representatives highlighted that incidents involving assaults and disputes have raised concerns about worker protection

  • “Drivers need immediate access to assistance in high-risk situations,” a community leader noted

The guidelines encourage ride-hailing and delivery platforms to implement real-time monitoring systems, emergency alert tools, and better coordination with law enforcement. Companies are also being urged to provide training on conflict management and safety awareness.

Experts note that the gig economy’s rapid expansion has outpaced regulatory frameworks, creating gaps in worker protection. “Policy updates are necessary to align with evolving work models,” an analyst observed.

The Indian Consulate has acknowledged the developments and is encouraging workers to utilise available safety features and report incidents promptly.
