Weatherman warns of landslips, mudflows in Himachal, heavy rain in Punjab, Haryana

IMD advises people to refrain from visiting affected areas

New Delhi: The IMD has issued an alert for the likely occurrence of landslides and mudflows on August 3 and 4 in Himachal Pradesh, a special report by Karam Prakash in The Tribune, Chandigarh, says.

It has issued an orange alert for the state as it is likely to receive “heavy to very heavy rain” on August 3 and 4.

The department has advised people not to visit areas affected by flooding, landslides and mudflows.

Latest report coming in say that the Chandigarh-Shimla highway has been closed for traffic after landslide. Accordingly, the district police have directed commuters to use alternative roads

The Parwanoo-Dharampur section of National Highway-5 has been closed for traffic after a major landslide occurred at Chakki ka Mor.

The district police have directed the commuters to use alternative roads like Parwanoo-Jangeshu, Kala Amb-Nahan-Kumarhatti or Baddi- Nalagarh-Ramshehar-Kunihar-Shimla to travel.

Work to repair the stretch is under way with several machines having been deployed to clear the highway.

Meanwhile, the Shimla police have routed traffic going from Shimla to Chandigarh via Theog-Sainj-Giripul-Oachghat- Kumarhatti-Sarahan-Kala Amb-Panchkula road while the traffic coming from Chandigarh would be routed via Dherowal-Nalagarh-Parsehar-Kunihar-Totu-Shimla for light vehicles.

The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for Punjab as well as the state is likely to witness heavy rain on August 3, 4 and 5.

“Thunderstorms and lightning are likely at isolated places in Punjab on Wednesday. Heavy rain and lightning are likely at isolated places between August 3 and 5,” said the department. Haryana is also expected to experience heavy rain on Aug 3, 4 and 5.
