A non-resident Indian (NRI) from Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district has been booked on multiple charges, including bigamy, dowry harassment, rape and attempted murder, following allegations that he concealed his existing marriage before marrying another woman in Moradabad.

Police said the case was registered at Mundha Pande police station on the basis of a complaint filed by the victim’s father. The FIR names the accused, Gagandeep Singh, along with his parents, another identified individual and two unidentified persons.

According to the complaint, Singh married the woman in April 2022 while allegedly concealing that he was already married to a woman living in Canada. The complainant claimed the family spent around ₹2 crore on the wedding and related dowry demands.

  • The family alleged that shortly after the marriage ceremony, the bride learnt from relatives that her husband already had a wife abroad

  • When confronted, Singh allegedly admitted that he had entered into the second marriage to strengthen his prospects of remaining in Canada

The complaint further alleged that when the woman refused to have physical relations after discovering the truth, Singh raped her. Her family also claimed that she endured prolonged harassment, which severely affected her mental health and required medical treatment.

The FIR states that repeated demands for the return of the alleged dowry were rejected, with the accused’s family claiming the money had already been invested in business ventures.

The complainant also alleged that on 25 June, he was called to a roadside eatery on the pretext of receiving the money back. He claimed the accused and his associates arrived armed with weapons and opened fire at him. He escaped unhurt by taking cover before the group fled the scene.

Police have registered offences under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including criminal intimidation, attempt to murder, criminal breach of trust, cruelty by a husband or his relatives, and marrying again during the subsistence of an earlier marriage without a legal divorce.

Officials said the allegations are under investigation and no conclusions have been reached regarding the guilt of the accused.
