Away thousands of kilometres from the motherland, the Indian diaspora keeps an eye on political developments in the country and respective states.

The latest example of this is the demand from North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) to engage hockey Olympian Pargat Singh in the new cabinet of Punjab.

The US-based NRI body has demanded NRI Affairs portfolio in the new Cabinet for Pargat Singh. The Olympian had won election from the Jalandhar Cantt constituency by a big margin of votes, The Tribune reported.

The NAPA executive director called for the government’s attention towards many issues concerning Punjabi diaspora

According to the report, “In a letter sent to PPCC president Navjot Singh Sidhu and Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, NAPA executive director Satnam Singh Chahal said a majority of the Punjabi diaspora was from the Doaba region.”

“So, the NRI Affairs Minister should be from this region and Pargat Singh was the best choice for the job,” said Satnam Singh Chahal.

The NAPA executive director called for the government’s attention towards many issues concerning Punjabi diaspora.
