Amidst recent concerns over the safety of Indian students studying in the United States, Gurdip Singh, Divisional Dean at the School of Computing, George Mason University, Virginia, has highlighted the continued welcoming environment provided by the US for international scholars from India, reported PTI.

In response to reports of the unfortunate deaths of 11 students of Indian origin in the US this year, Singh emphasized the absence of any established pattern indicating hate crimes or targeted violence against Indian students. Despite understandable parental concerns over such incidents, Singh reassured that there’s no discernible underlying cause for alarm within the academic community.

Singh acknowledged the need for vigilance among Indian students and emphasized the importance of considering the location of universities, noting that certain areas might have higher crime rates. However, he pointed out that many US campuses are situated in safe university towns, offering a conducive environment for academic pursuits.

While acknowledging the challenges, Singh reiterated that the US remains a welcoming destination for international students, reaffirming his message of resilience and optimism for students navigating their academic journeys in the country. He expressed hope that recent incidents would not deter students from pursuing their educational aspirations in the US.

According to the Institute of International Education’s Open Doors report, the number of Indian students in the US has nearly tripled from 132,888 in 2014-2015 to 353,803 in 2024, indicating a sustained interest in American higher education among Indian students.

Recognizing the heightened anxiety among students, particularly amidst economic uncertainties, Singh encouraged students to remain focused, patient, and consistent in their academic and professional endeavors. He underscored the abundant opportunities available in the US and urged students to stay resilient in pursuing their goals.

In an effort to support Indian students in the US, the Indian Embassy in Washington D.C. is collaborating with various universities to establish a network of Indian-origin professors on campuses with a significant Indian student population. This initiative aims to provide a supportive framework for students and address any urgent concerns that may arise.

While acknowledging the challenges, Singh reiterated that the US remains a welcoming destination for international students, reaffirming his message of resilience and optimism for students navigating their academic journeys in the country. He expressed hope that recent incidents would not deter students from pursuing their educational aspirations in the US.
