Wildlife enthusiasts a happy lot as tiger reserves in MP set to open up from Oct 1

It is time to rejoice for wildlife enthusiasts coming to Madhya Pradesh, as all tiger reserves of the state, that had been closed for the monsoons for three months, will be opened to visitors from October.

Madhya Pradesh is known as the ‘Tiger State’ because it has 20 per cent of India’s Wild Tiger Population and almost 10 per cent of the world’s tiger population.

Bandhavgarh is the best in this state, while the smallest tiger reserve here is Sanjay Dubri. There are 47 Tiger Reserves in the country, of which 6 are in MP.

Kanha National Park is high on popularity as 1239 tickets have already been reserved, followed by 1115 for Bandhavgarh, 737 for Pench, 93 for Satpura, 46 for Panna and 5 for Sanjay Tiger Reserve, according to forest department officials.

According to 2018 census, Madhya Pradesh had the highest tiger population in India–526–followed by Karnataka (524).

Madhya Pradesh chief conservator of forests (wildlife) Alok Kumar has said that there has been a  hike as now Indians and Foreigners will have to pay Rs 3,000 and Rs 6,000 respectively to enter the tiger reserve on premium days.

Based on the information that Madhya Pradesh has nearly a quarter of the country’s 12,852 leopards, Forest minister Madhya Pradesh, Kunvar Vijay Shah congratulated the residents of state as well as the forest department.

Project Tiger was launched by the Government of India in 1973 under which 9 protected areas with significant tiger presence, designated as Tiger Reserves, were selected for funding. A tiger reserve comprises a strictly protected core area (critical tiger habitat), with a buffer zone.  There are special grants from the Government of India, under the Project Tiger, through the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).

The tiger the national animal of India, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Korea, are mainly nocturnal predators. Since ancient times, considered one of the charismatic megafauna, used as the face of conservation campaigns worldwide, mankind has always been fascinated by the tiger, which as a result is visible in cultural and media motifs.
